Since August 2006, 20 trash surverys have been conducted based on MWCOG trash survey methodology on various reaches of Takoma Branch! These surveys help inform the community about where the trash hot spots are in their watershed, what kinds of garbage are consistently ending up on the side of the road and in the streams and how trash reduction efforts are affecting the trash loads. Here's what we found:

  • The roadway trash hot spots are Ray Road and Red Top Road

  • Paper and cardboard from fast food packaging show up most frequently on roadways followed by plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

  • Ray Road from New Hampshire Avenue to Knollbrook Drive has gone from having a moderate amount of trash to have a light amount of trash.

  • The trash levels on Knollbrook Drive remain light.

  • 4th Avenue to New Hampshire Avenue, Ray Road to Redtop Road, and Redtop Road to Dayton Avenue all have high trash levels.

  • The tributary hotspots are between Ray Road and Chillum Manor Road and upstream of New Hampshire Avenue.

  • Plastic bags show up most frequently in the stream followed by aluminum cans, paper products and construction debris.

The next cleanup event will be held Saturday, October 27th. Chillum Ray residents will conduct a stream and street trash. Click on the flier below for more information.
