Initial phases of construction on Knollbrook Drive.

Current Projects

Green Street

Prince George's County Department of Environmental Resources is turning Knollbrook Drive into a "Green Street". To accomplish this, PGDER is installing bioretention areas, filter swales and various plantings along the Knollbrook median between Ray Road and just beyond Cox Avenue. These are all examples of low impact development, a concept where natural processes are used to address stormwater runoff and pollution control. Not only will this project help clean the water entering Takoma Branch, but it will improve the aesthetics on Knollbrook Drive.

Plants and vegetation are installed on Knollbrook in the final phases of construction.

Fresh Creek Netting System

Prince George's County Department of Environmental Resources will begin the installation of a trash netting system in Takoma Branch just below Ray Road in late August/early September 2007. The nets are expected to trap and contain much of the trash and debris that is currently entering Takoma Branch from the Prince George's County, Montgomery County and the District portions of the subwatershed.

Ridgecrest Elementary School Logo and Slogan Contest

On May 22, 2007 MWCOG led the fifth graders of Ridgecrest Elementary School on a field trip to learn about how trash and pollutants enter the Takoma Branch and about the fish species that reside in the stream. After the trip the students were asked to come up with a logo and environmental slogan for a t-shirt that would represent what they learned about Takoma Branch. The winning logo and slogan will be printed on t-shirts and distributed to the fifth and sixth graders of Ridgecrest Elementary when school starts back up in September 2007.

Stormdrain Stencils

MWCOG in partnership with the Takoma Branch Advisory Committee and the Chillum Ray Citizens Association has designed stencils and curb markers to put on stormdrains in the neighborhoods around Takoma Park. Community members will help MWCOG apply the stencils in September in an effort to inform residents that the litter and liquids dumped down stormdrains in the area will end up in Takoma Branch. Click here to find out more about the connection between stormdrains and streams.
